25. Write a letter to your friend, describing your experience in the Exam. Hall.
Place
Date
Dear Arjun,
At last my examination is over. I am awfully tired and I really need a holiday. Before I go for a holiday, let me tell you some of my experiences in the examination hall.
I felt very nervous on the first day, when I was waiting outside with the other students for the doors to open. Most of them were talking and laughing. I felt so anxious that I could not speak to anyone. At last the doors were opened and we all crowded in and searched for our seats. We settled down in our places and waited anxiously for the papers. When I got the English question paper, I felt I could not answer a single question. However, when I read the questions more carefully, I learnt that I could answer most of the questions. I did not have much difficulty with Physics and Chemistry. But Mathematics was difficult. The supervisors were very strict and so there was no chance for any mal-practice. One boy was caught for copying and was expelled.
Now that my examination is over, I am going for a holiday. I hope for a good result.
Yours sincerely,

My dear Shyam,
You will be glad to know that my long felt desire of buying a bicycle has been fulfilled. How happy I was when my father bought it home in the evening! I could hardly wait anyone to see it. I snatched it from my father and found myself immediately on the roads. With a jump I was on it and felt like a bird in the air. It took me only a few minutes to have a round of Gandhi Square and to reach back home.
I wish you were here to share my joys.
Yours lovingly,

27.Write a letter to your friend writing about his faults and also about the good points of his character.
Examination Hall,
Delhi.
March 20, 2008
My dear Satish,
I am in receipt of your letter dated March 14, 2008. I was surprised to read that you want me to give my free opinion about you. Ordinarily, I would think twice before speaking on such matters because few people like to hear the truth. In your case, however, I have no hesitation because I know you thoroughly well.
You have certain quailities of head and heart. You are very intelligent indeed. In fact, a less intelligent person would never have asked others to bring out his virtues and defects. You have consistently improved upon your capacity to listen. Now you can be trusted with giving others a patient-hearing. You may at times lose patience under great provocation but certainly you are not liable to lose your nerves. Your ideas on friendship are no doubt high. You are worthy of being called a friend in need.
Another point which goes in your favour is that you are very hard working. You are kind and generous by nature and cannot tolerate injustice being done to anybody. You are not liable to be led away by personal prejudices. You cannot, I am sure, be bribed. In fact, you have right qualities which a prospective candidate for I.A.S. should possess.
In spite of this there is a great drawback in you which alone can mar all your qualities. You are very emotional and liable to be swayed away by pity. Sometimes this creates in you a sense of quality and you cannot decide matters forthwith. Remember you restless you were when you caught a pickpocket red-handed but were about to leave him after patiently hearing from him the misery with which his children would face in his absence. In similar cases your sympathies may be misplaced and you, in spite of yourself, fail to do justice.
Well, you know everybody has some fault or the other in spite of his virtues. But it is only the wise who go in for heart-searching. That in itself is a great quality.
I have given my free opinion about you. Write to me how do you feel after reading it ?
How are your mother and father? Please convey my best regards to them.
Yours sincerely,
Surendra,
28. Write a letter to your father informing him of your success in winning a prize at a debate.
216, Chandni Chowk,
Delhi.
February 26, 2008
My dear father,
You will be very glad to know that this year's top prize for the best debator has come to me. It is a silver trophy beautifully cast and the name of the school is engraved on it.
The debate was on ‘Inter-school’ level. Three other boys from different schools took part in it. The topic of discussion was ‘Whether Municipalisation of Secondary School Education would be Beneficial.’
All the three boys spoke in favour of it. They said that municipali-sation of secondary education was the only way to bring about reforms in the system of education. According to them, it was proper to pass over secondary education to Municipal authorities to enable them to correlate the primary and secondary education. This would, they argued, channelise education from primary stage to higher secondary stage in one single stream which will make for uniform progress.
Their argument convinced many. My teachers felt restless when I stood up to speak. I started with a feeble voice but soon it became forceful. I smashed their arguments by saying whether my friends, in order to channelise education in one stream, would like to municipalise college education as well ? My arguments went home and the audience seemed convinced. I was highly applauded. My rivals were silent and I was declared the winner.
I was later told by my teacher that the manner of my speech was forceful as were my arguments. The boys and teachers of my school were very happy because I had brought honour to them. The function ended happily.
How is mother ? I wish you were here these fine days. Love to Kuckoo.
Yours affectionately,
Rishi
29.Write a letter to your old teacher, giving impressions of your new school and teachers.
Moti Ganj,
Hathras.
July, 24, 2008.
Respected Sahniji,
I reached my new place of study on Saturday last. Today is Tuesday. Within three days I have learnt a lot about school boys and teachers here, and I am writting this letter to give young a gist of my experience.
Ordinarily it would be difficult to form an opinion about others within such a short time. But the saying that coming events cast their shadows before time is correct, I think I will never have to change my opinion.
The moment I reached my school and sent word to the Principal, boys came rushing to receive me. They seemed happy to find a new addition in the rolls of the school. Many of them put different questions in a single breath asking my name, class, name of the previous school and my parents. They took me by the arm and conducted me to the Principal's room.
The Principal offered me a seat. I gave him the letter of recommendation from you. He praised you very much and assured me that a teacher of your standing would never write a letter of recommendation in undeserving cases. Therefore, he said, I was welcome to the school.
He then introduced me to my class teacher. He gave me a test. The manner of his asking questions from me was so sweet that replying to him was a matter of joy for me. His treatment showed that I was not at all a stranger to him.
I have been granted admission to Xth class and I have started my studies in the right earnest from the beginning. Though I feel quite comfortable here, yet I miss you very much.
I hope to see you during the Dussehra holidays to relate more experiences.
Meanwhile I remain, Sir,
Yours obediently,
Rohit Moni
30.Suppose you are a foreigner touring India. Write a letter home to some member of your family giving him or her your impressions of the country.
Tip Top Hotel,
Generalganj,
Kanpur.
December 24, 2008
My dear Alice,
I hope you have received my previous letter by now.
During these days, I have been visiting one place after another. In my last letter I told you that I was leaving Mumbai for Varanasi. I reached Varanasi early in the morning of Tuesday last. There beautiful ‘ghats’ or the banks of the Ganga are a scene of great activity for the Hindus in the morning. The river flows so charmingly at a distance from the big shrines. There is neither the swiftness nor the shapelessness of the rivers here as in England.
I saw the Taj yesterday on a moonlight night. You will not believe me how enchanting the Taj is. It is all white marble and the layout of the gardens around it adds to its magnificence.
In the morning today I flew to Bhakra Nangal. It is a very high dam and matchless in the history of Asia. It is a great feat of engineer-ing skill.
Wherever I went I found the people busy in their work. At Varanasi, I saw a class of people called here ‘Brahmins’ who sit on the river banks and invoke blessings of gods and goddesses in favour of their visitors. Quite a number of them do not look like genuine priests. In this country people are very hospitable. This I found during my visit to Bhakra. The sturdy peasants of this region called the Punjab actually surrounded me and expressed their joy at meeting me by performing a dance called ‘Bhangra’. It is such a carefree exercise of the linbs that the like of which I have never seen in any other part of the world.
The country, as a whole, has changed a lot. I saw progress in every field of activity. Many new industries have sprung up. I was told that India was now capable to participating in space race.
There is still another point. Wherever I went, I found people desirous of peaceful progress. There is no effort at making false claims and creating mischief. It is really a socialist society which Indians were labouring hard to raise out of the ruins of the past.
I feel my visit to this country has paid me well. I wish you were able to accompany me.
Your loving brother,
Manik Chand Jain

I apologise I could not write to you earlier. It was not that I was busy in my studies. It was just for very interesting thing. Only a fortnight ago, a new boy named Mahendra Yadav joined our school in my class. He was given a seat beside me. At first sight I did not like him but his habits have endeared him to me and to many other boys so much that on the first Saturday we all went out for a picnic to a nearby village and passed our Saturday holiday on his initiative.
Mahendra is almost of my age and complexion. He is very good at studies. Because he sits with me in the classroom, we have become fast friends.
The most lovable thing in Mahendra's character is his quality of leadership. He has not been here for more than a mere fortnight and he is already being tipped for leadership of our class. During this period he has organised on two occasions outings and managed the whole show single handedly. Few boys can compare with him. The teachers are also very impressed by him.
You would be glad to know that I have already invited him to accompany me during the summer vacations. I am sure you would be glad to meet him.
Please convey my respects to dear mother.
Your loving son,
Atul
32.Your friend is poor but good at studies. He is thinking of leaving the school. Write a letter advising him not to take this step and promising help to him.
Raniwala Ghera

September 18, 2008
My dear Raghubir,
I am in receipt of your letter and beileve me, the contents of it shocked me. I could never imagine that a student of your ability could ever think of leaving school because of financial hardships.
I know that your parents are too poor to support you. It is a strange thing that such a brilliant boy as you are should belong to a family too poor to enable you to continue your studies. In the circumstances you are in a more pitiable position for no fault of yours.
But I advise you not to lose heart. Life is a great struggle and one cannot taste its ultimate sweetness unless one has experienced its miseries, who knows what good will come out of your present difficulties?
Last night when I was reading your letter and thinking over it, my father suddenly appeared on the scene and inquired about you. He was very much shocked to learn about your difficulties. He was all the more sorry to think that a brilliant student like you would ruin his life because of financial difficulties. You will be glad to know that he very kindly agreed to a monthly allowance of Rs. 150/- to you. I hope you will have no obligation to this help and will never think of leaving school before completing your studies.
Please let me know if this amount will enable you to meet your needs. We can raise the amount upon your asking. Please be frank and do not worry about anything.
Your sincere friend,
Dhanesh.
33.Write a letter to your friend giving your impressions of the hostel life in a school.
Vrindaban Gate,
Mathura.
July 28, 2008.
My dear Kapil,
You will be happy to know that I have succeeded in getting a room in the school Vaishya hostel. I am writing this letter to give you my impressions of hostel life.
Hostel life for a student is very useful. It regulates his life and creates in him a sense of discipline. Generally, more than one student lives in a room which provides all of them opportunity to come into one another's contact more closely and study human nature.
In our hostel 90 students of various classes have been given accommodation. On the very first occasion I felt a sense of loneliness but soon I made several friends. Now life in the hostel is full of charm. It is extremely delightful and interesting. Though mostly we live inside our hostel yet there are no rigid checks and restraints.
Our warden is a great disciplinarian. He always expects from us everything in time. He is as much interested in our studies and health as in our moral make-up. He keeps a strict watch on those who return to hostel late in the night.
From what I have seen in my hostel I can say that it is here that we learn the art of living. We discuss about current events and organise outdoor trips and come to know how to move in society. As such life in a hostel is never dull and monotonous.
I would appreciate very much if you could come over here to live with me for a couple of days and see things with your own eyes. Shall I hope you will come ?
Your sincere friend,
Ram Mohan Gupta
34.Write a letter to your brother describing your experience of a very cold and rainy day.
Hanuman Gali,
Sadabad.
My dear father,
I am in receipt of your letter and have noted its contents. I am really sorry for not writing any letter to you during the past two weeks. In fact, life in Shimla these days has become very difficult on account of the sweeping cold wind and continued rains.
The 18th of January this year was the coldest day of the season. Though it had been raining continuously since the 16th, yet it was on the 18th that we experienced the heaviest rainfall. The cold increased to almost unbearable extent. Every blow of wind sent shivers in our body. The heaters in our rooms were unable to warm us. Our woollies could not keep away the cold from our bodies.
The sky was heavily overcast with dark clouds and the rain had been lashing the ground with full fury. It was impossible to go out. All streets and roads wore a deserted look and small streams of rain water were flowing down the mountainous roads.
That day our milkman did not turn up at our house and we were afraid of going out to buy fresh milk from the bazar. Consequently we had to fall back upon powdered milk. Tea or coffee taken many times during the day afforded little comfort and we continued shivering even amidst the warmest atmosphere in our rooms.
We thanked God when in the evening the clouds burst and rain stopped. Yet this was no satisfaction because the icy cold night lay ahead. Our teeth were chattering and our fingers benumbed so much that our hands had been incapacitated. It was with great difficulty that we passed the night. I had never experienced such a cold and rainy day in my life.
Please convey my respects to dear mother and father.
Your loving brother,
Manish.
35. Write a letter to your mother telling her how you saved the life of a child.
F/42, Rooki Mandi,
Jhansi
April 16, 2008
My dear father,
Today I am writing this letter to relate to you a very happy experience of the day. I hope you would be very glad to know that my scouting in school has helped me to save the life of a child today.
It so happened that in the morning today, I along with six boys of my hostel went to take a bath in the river. We saw there men, women and children taking their bath near the banks. A woman was giving her four-year old son a bath at a little distance from the main ghats. The child suddenly slipped from her hand and was carried away by the current. The woman started screaming but in the noise her cries were not audible.
The cries suddenly fell on my ears and at once I understood the reason from her raised hands pointing towards the drowning child. It was too much for me and at once I jumped into the river without bothering to take off my clothes.
There was not much water in the river and the current was also not swift. It was however, too much for a little child who was being carried away slowly and slowly by the current.
I was swimming swiftly. When I was about to catch hold of the child suddenly I slipped into a ditch. I was about to go down into the water but my scouting spirit came to my rescue and I did not lose courage.
I am an expert swimmer. I raised myself from my slip and again dashed towards the child. Soon I was able to catch hold of him. In the meantime a couple of other swimmers had swam up to me and we were now able to raise the child above the water and bring him back to the bank.
The child was unconscious. I gave him first aid and water in his stomach was drained out. After some time the child regained consciousness and his mother heaved a sigh of relief and with tears in her eyes folded her hands before me.
She must be of your age. I told her that it was just my duty. After all it was not for nothing that I had become a scout.
The other boys related the incident to my teachers who were very pleased with me. It was praised very much and the Headmaster proposed to give me some reward.
I am all right here. I hope to see you soon during the summer vacations.
Please pay my respects to father and love to Munni.
36.) Your father is in Mumbai recovering after an operation. Write a cheerful letter to him giving him the news of your life and work at home.
Pant Nagar,
Nainital,
February 24, 2008
My dear father,
I am in receipt of your letter. We were all glad to learn that you are satisfactorily progressing towards recovery.
You have inquired about news here. I think you should not have worried yourself about us during your illness.
You will be glad to know that Ashok stood first in the class in the examination. He is likely to get some reward. Most probably it would be a medal and some books.
Rita and Krishna have also been declared successful though without distinction. They are very happy because both of them had fared badly in their Arithmetic papers, and were expecting failure. They have promised not to waste their time in playing and do hard work in future.
You will be glad to know that the Manager of your office visited us yesterday to enquire about your health. He assured me of financial help to any extent. I thanked him on your behalf. He spoke very kindly, accepted tea from us and inquired about my studies.
Our neighbours are helping us a lot, Rama's mother cooks our meals in time and never allows us to feel the absence of mother. Before going to sleep, Rama's father also visits our house to cheer us and their servant, Makhu sleeps in our house to guard us. In fact we are being looked after very carefully. We have no worry except when to see you back hale and hearty.
Please pay my best respects to dear mother. Assure her not to worry about us.
Your loving son,
Ajit.
37.Write a letter to a pen friend living in England, telling him about your school.
Lal Darwaza,
Etah.
January 21, 2008.
My daer Harry,
I am in receipt of your letter and a copy of your photograph. Believe me I was so glad to look at it that I showed it to my friends and parents. I really wish we were able to meet each other some time in life.
You have expressed your desire to know about my school. I give below a brief account of it.
The name of my school is Govt. Model School. It is situated at a distance of 2 km. from the city. It has a built in area of 2,000 square yards. Every room contains simple furtniture. It has a big playground, a garden, a laboratory, a library and 24 classrooms.
The school was started sixy years ago. Its Principal is a very well-known academician who has been to England as a teacher for several years. He takes great interest in teaching his students. He always stresses the importace of punctuality and discipline which, he says, English children learn in their mursery. His motto is; hard work and high character. He calls meetigns every Saturday and gives a gist of English life and society. It is through his efforts that our school has become a model institution.
Our teachers are equally interested in teaching us. They give due importance to sports. They give us all facilities to do hard practice. It is as such that our school is second to none in the field of sports.
Once a month outdoor rallies are organised. We are taught how to move in society. How to face great dangers without losing courage. In fact, the lessons of a lifetime importance are a part of our syllabus.
Scouting is another feature of our school. Our P.T.I. always stresses the importance of building up high character in a highly developed body. Rallies and jamboories are organised off and on. We get instruction as well as recreation.
Our school is very expensive. We have to pay Rs. 450/- per month as tuition fees and spent about Rs. 140/- more per month on stationery, bus and pocket money. In India, middle class families cannot afford to spare so much. Consequently, children of high class people alone can benefit from this standard.
Please pay my best regards to your parents. I am enclosing a copy of my photograph as desired by you. I do not know to which of your frinds you will show it but please do not show it to your parents otherwise they will make a fun of you for having chosen an ill-figured boy like me as your pen friend.
Your sincere friend,
Laxmi Narain Garg.
38. Write a letter to your Headmaster giving an explanation for your misbehaviour with the class teacher and offering an apology.
To,
The Headmaster
D.A.V. High School,
Agra.
Sir,
I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your letter asking me to submit my explanation for misbehaving with my class taecher. I am pained to learn that you intend to take a disciplinary action against me for breach of discipline.
I think I shall be failing in my duty if I do not offer a satisfactory explanation to you. To state in brief, my class teacher, Sri Krishna Chand's complaint against me is not justified though not in the least objectionable also, because it is based in misunderstanding.
He has joined the school only recently and I was not aware of his strict nature. By speaking in the class very quickly, he might have just thought of making an impression on us. And when I interrupted him by asking a question, I never meant any dis-respect to him. I wanted a clarification and nothing more. There was no doubt in my mind about his scholarly qualities.
Even if he has taken exception to my putting a question, I am really very sorry for it. I could never think that I would give him such an impression.
I assure you, Sir, that I have never been a mischief-maker. You can gather opinion about me from other teachers of my class. In any case, I offer my apologies to you and to him. I also promise never in future to give him any chance of complaint against me. I trust I have made my point quite clear to you and you will kindly drop the charges against me.
Yours obediently,
Brij Kishore Saini
39. Write a letter to your Uncle describing the Inspector's visit to your school.
Daulatganj
Unnao,
January 17, 2008
Dear Uncle,
I am sorry that I could not write to you earlier. I was so busy here in my studies because the annual exam. is at hand.
The Inspector of Schools paid a surprise visit to our school today, as we were later told that somebody had complained against our school. Therefore he reacehd our school at 9 a.m. sharp, perhaps to see for himself whether the school starts its work in time. Before he arrived, the entire school was ready as if to receive him. He visited every classroom, office, laboratory and the library. Everywhere he found things in order and everything was neat and clean.
He entered many classrooms and saw teachers taking classes. He examined us in English and we did well. He was very much pleased with my pronunciation.
He was accompanied by the Deputy Inspector of Schools and two other officials. These officials visited other classes and examined boys in various subjects.
In the office, they examined a few registers. He was so pleased with all round progress that he entered very good remarks in the school log-book and left about 1 p.m. He was very glad with the progress the students had been making. As such we were given a holiday for the rest of the day in Hour of the visitor.
With best wishes and kind regards.
Yours affectionately,
Vijay

40.) Write a farewell letter of thanks to the Headmaster of your school, on leaving school to join college.
Namak-ki-Mandi,
Muzaffarnagar.
16th March, 2008
Sir,
May I inform you that I have succeeded in getting admission to St. Peters College. The rush of admission-seekers was so heavy at one stage that I had lost all hopes of getting admission.
When I appeared before the Admission Committee for an interview, I requested the members of the Committee just to go through the certificate which you were so kind to award me at the time of my leaving the school. The certificate had the desired effect and finally I was admitted without taking the trouble of answering very many questions.
Believe me, Sir, I cannot thank you by words alone. You have been always so kind and generous to me that I will never forget. It was really our good luck that you came to be the head of our school. In these times it is ordinarily not possible to have at the head of institutions persons with a broad outlook on life and a sense of duty. You always took a real interest in the welfare of students and teachers. All these generosities when recalled make the idea of parting with you very painful. Yet part we must.
I, therefore, write this to express my heartfelt thanks to you and other teachers of my school with whom I had a year's long association.
Yours obediently,
Janki Prasad
41.Write a letter to your friend telling him what profession you would like to adopt in life.
Janki Sadan,
Roshan Mohalla,
Mainpuri.
February 16, 2008.
My dear Ajay,
Please accept my thanks for your kind letter. I am glad to learn that you have passed your M.A. Examination in English in the first division. Your brilliant success has, I think, already decided about your future. You would, I believe, make a very succcessful lecturer.
You have asked me about what profession I would like to adopt in life. To speak frankly, it is very difficult for an average student to decide what exactly he wants to do in life, because so much depends on success in annual examinations alone.
So far as I am concerned, and if my past academic record is any guide. I may go in for training in librarianship. You know a librarian has got to be a very responsible, learned, and hard working man. And I have, I think, all these qualities. You know my record in school is top-most. I have a great aptitude for keeping in safe custody books of great value, and I know how to deal with students in schools and colleges when they borrow and return books.
Besides this there is a great scope in this line, and given proper encouragement and training, I may be able to attain perfection. There are other equally honourable professions, but I am either not interested in them.
I do not know what you would think of me after reading this letter. But I shall be glad to get your true and honest opinion about my choice of the profession.
Yours sincerely,
42. Write a letter to the head boy of your school congratulating him on his success in being elected to the office of general secretary of the school union.
Mammoon Bhanje Ghatia,
Aligarh
November 10, 2008.
My dear Suresh,
Please accept my congratulations on your elections as the general secretary of the school union. Believe me, your election to this high office is not a mere accident. The students of our school must be a very intelligent electorate. Indeed their choice has fallen on a very well-deserving among them.
You already enjoy a high reputation in our school and you have enough experience of conducting the affairs of the union. I have no doubt in my mind that the interests of the school's students as well as those of the teachers will always be taken note of by you in deciding matters of various kinds.
With best wishes.
Sincerely yours,
43.) Write a letter to your pen-friend informing him that you are sending a book to him.

December 10, 2008
My dear Alice,
I am glad to acknowledge the receipt of your very kind and appreciative letter of the 2nd inst.
I wonder whether you have already received the booklet of poems that I sent to you. Today, I am forwarding a second book on to you by separate post and shall be glad to hear that you have received it safely.
I wrote this boy during the course of the summer holidays in Simla.
I do not know whether the poems are readable at all by your standard. In any case I shall be grateful if you could give me your opinion about them.
Meanwhile I am going through your book of poetry. I find many poems in it are very interesting. I shall give my opinion in my next letter after I have finished reading them.
Please pay my best respects to your parents. You do not know how much I wish I were able to see you, but then as somebody said : “If wishes were horses—”
With kindest regards,
Yours very sincerely,
John
44.Write a letter to the Principal of the college in which your son is reading complaining of your son being bullied
Purana Chowk
Ujhani.
February 10, 2008
Dear Sir,
I am sorry to point out that my son Vinay Kumar Katyal, student of IXth class of your college, has been found to be very much distressed and out of sorts for the last few days. There are bruises on his cheeks and forehead and his face is pulled down. He has not told me the true facts but I can presume that he is receiving injuries from some boys of higher classes.
I am afraid if I don't bring this fact to your notice, I will not be doing duty as a guardian. I request you to please take Vinay into confidence and discover the facts so that if there is anything wrong with him it may be mended.
Please don't think that I am writing this in a complaining spirit. In fact, Vinay has gained a lot since he joined your school. Only the low spirits in which I have found him during the last few days have compelled me to write this letter to you so that you could make enquiries and do anything you consider necessary for the welfare of my son.
Thanking you.
Yours very truly,
Abdhesh Kumar Katyal
45. Write a letter from a father to his son asking him to work hard to pass the examination with high marks.
46, Rani Bazaar,
Saharanpur
22nd January, 2008
Dear Subhash,
I am in receipt of your school report. I am pained to read that you are not doing well in your studies. In English and Social Studies you have got barely pass marks. In Hindi also you have not fared well. I am really greatly dissatisfied with the report. I wonder whether you are caring that your annual examinations are at hand.
I learn from your report that you have done well in games. Maybe, your whole attention towards games is responsible for your poor results. Games are quite good, but at all the cost of studies. Too much of games is as bad as too much of studies. Remember the old saying ‘excess of everything is bad’. By playing too much and not reading at all, as Har Dayal said, “you feed the body and starve the soul.”
Do not neglect your studies, now that your annual examinations are near. For the rest two months you should devote your full attention to the studies and pass the examination with credit. It is no use passing third division.
I shall be anxiously waiting for seeing improvement in your studies in your next monthly test.
Love from mother.
Yours affectionately,
M.L. Yadav

57. Write a letter to your brother telling him of an accident which recently happened to you.
 20, Stadium Road, Mathura.
27th September, 2008
My dear Father,
I thank you for your letter dated 22nd September, 2008. Everything goes on smoothly here. Only yesterday a small accident happened, which I relate below—At about 9.30, I started for my school. In the way I noticed that a car was coming on some unusually fast speed and since we both were on our proper sides, I never cared much about it. Accidentally, a small girl came from a lane on my left and wanted to cross the road. She was quite ignorant of the approach of the car. When the driver of the car saw her, he in his attempt to save the girl moved the car towards me and by the time the car stopped, it struck me very heavily. I had a narrow escape, but the front wheel of my cycle was broken. The owner of the driver, who was also in the car apologised. I was much moved by the gentlemanliness of the man and let him go.After this I hired a tonga, kept my cycle on it and went to the nearest cycle's repairer. I had to have the wheel changed. I few minor repairs were also carried out. The cycle is again now in working order. I reached my school about two hours late that day.How is Lal Chand? I shall be sending a small toy for him in a few days.
Yours affectionately,
Ram Chand

Shall I be a doctor, a teacher, a lawyer, or a businessman. But I may tell you that I have more inclination for business and industry, because if one works honestly and industriously, it prospers at a great speed. I have also read the autobiographies of several business magnets and know how they achieved success and made history.

59.Write a letter to your father telling him about the visit of the Inspector of Schools in your school.
20, Kailash Puri, Ghaziabad.
 November 20, 2008
My dear Father,
I am really sorry for not writing you earlier, as I was busy in making preparations for the visit of the Inspector of Schools.About ten days back the Head-master had received information that the Inspector would be paying a visit to our school on the 18th instant. So the Headmaster called all the teachers of the school and told them to be alert. He gave them several instructions. The teachers in their turn warned every student to look better, wear better and behave properly. All the teachers seemed to be nervous. Every now and then the peon was called to remove the dust from the glass panes of the windows or the webs of the spiders. The sweeper got tired of cleaning the floors again and again. All the different charts and maps of the class were several times fixed and refixed on the walls and still the Headmaster was not satisfied that their styles could please the Inspector. We also became fed up with the uneasiness that was prevailing in the school, and wanted that the Inspector should have come earlier. At last the day of the Inspector came. He came guarded by two Deputy Inspector of Schools, and one District and two Assistant District Inspectors of Schools. These all Inspectors looked like ordinary men and I saw nothing to be afraid of them. Some of the teachers and boys were wearing better clothes than the Inspectors. These Inspectors went to different classes and tested them. They simply asked one or two questions and that was all. The Divisional Inspector tested in English. He had some reading and then asked certain meanings and explanations. All went away by 3.30 p.m. and the school staff got relief with their departure.

Your envelope containing Roli and Rakhi was delivered to me this morning when we were taking our breakfast. I cannot express the joy I felt to see the sacred thread of love and affection sent by you. It saved kindgoms in the past.I hope you and yours are in the best of their health just as we all are here. I have remitted rupees fifty for you, which please accept and oblige, knowing fully well that it is only a small token of respect from a poor brother to a loving sister.Respects to your mother-in-law and regards to Jeejajee. 69. Letter to your father describing the annual function of your school.
 Vikram Hr. Sec. School Shivpuri.
18th January, 2008
My dear Father,
I am sorry I could not write to you earlier. I beg to be excused. Last week we had the annual day celebration in our school. In fact the annual day celebrations were drawn to cover full three days. On the first two days, the sports rally was held in the park adjacent to our school. The lawns were in lush green. Tall shady trees stood in neat rows. Buntings and decorated tents added decor to the beautiful natural setting. The rally was a great success. One record in javelin and one in broad jump were shattered. I took part in races. I got second place in 100 metre race and first in 200 metre race. In high jump event, I cleared five feet.In the evening we had the debate. My extempore speech was adjudged second to the best. My quotations were said to be well-drawn and well-recited. Tell dear mother that they were none else than the ones I learnt at her knee in my childhood. In Antyakshari, I ran away with the first prize. The credit goes to your deep knowledge of Hindi literatureOn the third day was held the prize distribution. It was very well arranged. The District Magistrate was in the chair. To be frank, I never saw such a nice function before. Dramatic pieces were effective. I played the role of Chand Bardai in the famous play ‘Prithviraj-ki Anken’. Songs were simply fine, speeches excellent. The Principal's report was well received. In the prize distribution, I had my own humble share. The Principal's speech was short and sweet. I had a great effect on the audience. On the whole it was an excellent function.I intend coming on Shiv Ratri for a day or two. With most respectful compliments to self and dear mother. Love to Madhu and Sumit.
Yours affectionately,
Ajaya
70.Letter describing a visit to a local exhibition to your friend.
 285, Peepal Mandi, Agra.
10th April, 2008
Dear Suresh,
I was glad to receive your letter last week. You want me to tell you about the local exhibition. I personally went there to give you a first hand report. The exhibition was held in the spacious field of Ramlila ground. A fencing of 12 ft. corrugated iron sheets made it quite safe from unauthorised entry. The entry gate was made of green bamboos. Its makers had really done a good job. Bright bulbs and rods of various hues made it indeed very attractive. The whole thing pleased the eyes.Inside it was a pleasing sight. There were as many as 250 stalls. The one from the Embassy of Germany was the most spacious and best decorated. Gandhi Ashram Bhandar attractions were many. A hundred-rupees set include a pyjama, a kurta, an undervest and a cap. The stall of U.P. State Handicraft Deptt. attracted big crowds. Pieces of embroidered silk, marble-cut-monuments and machine-vulcanised shoes were hot favourites.About 50 more stalls of various industries, including the handicraft work from prisoners, glasswares from Firozabad added quality and variety to the show. Then came the ‘Eatables Square’. Confectioners from Meerut, Varanasi, Allahabad and Mathura drew the longest crowds. The Agra people sold Petha, Dal-month and salty things. The ‘Children Square’ was fairly interesting. The rolling giant wheel, the merry-go-round, the small zoo and the circus were most popular. Then came the ‘Well of Death’, ‘The Disappearing Lady’ and ‘Marvels of Mary’. The old lady, without hands, prepared tea with her feet, sewed, wrote and did pieces of embroidery.Above all, excellent light arrangements gave the exhibition a festive look. In night it looked like day.I think a visit there is worthwhile. I shall wait for you. You may come any day this week.Hope it finds you in the best of your health and happiness. Bring Sushil and Sushma with you. Mother conveys you her blessings.
Yours sincerely,
Rajendra

72.Letter to your pen-friend telling him about your holiday.
5, Civil Lines, Ghaziabad, U.P., India.
 13th May, 2008
Dear Roberts,
Thanks many for your letter of 22nd April, 2008. It was a real pleasure to know about your hobby and all that you have done to make it a source of pleasure. I will be doing my bit to help you.You have asked me to relate to you about my hobby. You may not like my hobby. It gives me nothing and yet it gives me everything. It costs me nothing and yet it costs me all. I can pay for it.My hobby is nursing. I liked it since my childhood. I had it in its full vigour and clarity when my younger brother fell ill. I was only of 12 years then. My brother was eight. I sat near him. I did my bit. I cleaned him, changed his clothes, prepared his bed, gave him massages and applied oil in his head. I gave him medicines regularly and maintained temperature charts. Soon the family depended on me. The doctor enquired of me only about my brother’s condition. The doctor praised me profusely. But I did not do it for praises. I did it for my pleasure. It gave me utmost joy.Soon after, I never missed an opportunity of nursing any one in my neighbourhood. Like a self-appointed volunteer, I began to be expected whenever anybody was ill in the vicinity. I now devoted my evenings to this work.Only fifteen days back I found an old sadhu dying on the road. I took him home. Father and mother co-operated. It was a serious case but I laboured day and night. I called Dr. Verma. He gave me a few injections and when I wanted to pay him with savings of my pocket money, he gave a pat on my back and refused to accept any fee. Seven days' labour brought the sadhu sound. He began to walk. He begged leave of me. I touched his feet. With tears in his eyes, he said, “Bachha (child), you have saved my life. I have nothing to give you save my blessings. My Master (God) will see, you get all.” So saying he went away. I got all. I could expect nothing more.So this is my hobby, Roberts. Animals love me alike. Some torn tissue, or a broken leg has received bandages at my hands. They have offered to act as my companions.I have plenty of time to nurse and there is plenty of need for the same. I think I am paid richly for the time I spend in it.With regards to your parents,
Yours sincerely,
Dinesh

74.Letter to your Uncle describing a match between your first eleven and that of Janta Higher Secondary School.
 57, G.B. Pant Hostel, Nainital
 October 11, 2008.
Dear Uncle,
You have always encouraged me to take to batting seriously. Your advice did me lots of good. Let me tell you how.On Saturday last we played a cricket match with Janta Hr. Sec. School XI. You will know it is a very strong team, but in a tourney you must either play or give up. I, as vice-captain of our school XI, decided to give them a good fight, come what may.Our courage received another jolt when we saw their team of all stout young players. But it is cricket to play. We lost the toss. We were sent in to field. Kapoor and I began to bowl. They were quite active and knew their job, but one of my workers deceived No. 1 and far flew his centre wicket. Score stood twenty-two. Then Kapoor struck form and in an over pocketed two more. I rested myself after five overs and sent in Govind to send down a few leg-cutters. That move paid rich dividends. Soon they had lost their six wickets for only 52 runs. That was good going. At lunch their tail was trying hard to wag.On resumption of the play, the first ball broke the partnership and the innings closed at 89. Our openers went in. Their bowling was supreme. Our openers were back to the pavillion with only two runs on the board. No. 3, Kishore tried to stem the rot but he failed. I, with the approval of the Captain, went at No. 4. I first decided to see the balls through. I played the first two overs with caution. Then I could see some loose balls also. Two boundaries in the third over made them nervous. Then I could see the ball well. I hooked, I turned, I swept. The score began to mount and at tea we were 60 for five. After tea, Raju, who was giving me excellent support was declared l.b.w. Dogra in his place proved better and now we played merrily. We won with ten minutes to spare and three wickets in tact. I had scored 46 out of 90 runs. I may get the ‘Man of the Match’ prize at the annual prize distribution. Thanks many for your advice Uncle, and now pat me on my back.
Your loving nephew,
 Pritam.

76. Letter to your mother describing a flood scene.
49, Church Road, New Delhi.
 November 17, 2008
Dear Mother,
Your letter received yesterday. I am perfectly safe and sound. Please do not worry. The flood this year was unprecedented. Never in the history of Delhi the last 25 years, the old people say, they have witnessed the Yamuna in so angry a mood.Reports of heavy rains in the Punjab State had definitely made people think of a flood in Delhi. For the last three days, all the godowns on low levels, by the Yamuna bank, were being cleared off the goods they contained. But the flood came earlier than anticipated. Several villages were washed off. The banks swelled and the water began to devour all that it could reach to. Man, money and material, all the three became its victims. The wide expanses of muddy water, with foams of wrath, floating over it, spared nothing. The kind mother Yamuna turned into a wild killer. Several houses came down. The thatches were swept away. Animals were driven away in the current. All types of animals—bulls, dogs, horses, wolves, jackals, even snakes—could be seen floating in the Yamuna.People of the neighbouring villages began to take shelter at high places—trees, mounds, but the flood water soon surrounded them. People sitting on tree tops with constant danger of trees themselves being swept away, prayed and waited for the rescue parties. The Yamuna continued shooting up and up for three days. Then it relented. Like a man coming to his senses, it began to come to its original banks.Military men and the social workers, under the guidance of local authorities, began to do rescue work. Difficult situation had to be faced. Two men had to be rescued in a sand island in the heart of the Yamuna with the help of helicopters. Men were saved, animals were taken out. It cost the government a lot. So, it had cost the people. But to the Yamuna, it had cost the most. It cost its good name.Thank God, the water did not come our Mohalla. We gave shelter to as many as we could. With respects to self and great Uncle.
Yours affectionately,
Meena

77. Letter of condolence on the death of the father of your friend
Daftarion-ki-Kothi Ganj-ki-Gali, Alwar
6th February, 2008.
Dear Rajeshw,
The sad news of the death of your dear father has shocked me. What a pious soul he was! When I was at yours, I felt I got my father back in him. Such kind souls, as he was, are becoming rare. The world is getting poorer in love. His deeds were a model to be copied. Death visits everybody once. His will is supreme. What cannot be cured must be endured. Take courage in this hour of bereavement. Please permit me to offer my heart-felt sympathy to you and your bereaved family. May the Almighty God give peace to this pious soul and strength to you people to bear the shock.
Yours condolingly,
Prakash.
78.A letter to your younger brother who is not doing well at studies.
 Engineer College, Roorkee,
 5th October, 2008.
Dear Biru
,I have received a letter from father in which he has written to me about your bad result at the first terminal examination. He is sad at this. He expected better performance from you.Dear brother, it is surprising to find you so low on the ladder. You were very intelligent then. We had studied together. I know your capacities. The steep fall in attainments in mathematics and English are heart-breaking. I know there is a lot of difference between classes X and XI. There is a change in the method of teaching. Lectures are not so easy to understand, as lessons in the High School classes. However, it should not have been a very difficult thing for you. Your grasp is so keen. What I am afraid of is that you have failed to adjust yourself in the hostel. In your bid to be popular, you might have given up studies and even lectures at college. With nobody to check your movements, you are master of your will. Some good students have been seen to have fallen prey to this false notion of popularity. They went astray and spoiled their careers. May God forbid, if you take to that path, my heart will ache. Is it not the very college where your elder brother got a first class with distinction in Mathematics ?Beware of fair-weather friends. They do not love you; they love your money. They will not be sorry if you go to dogs. Your teachers may be giving you a few concessions because you are my brother. I am also writing to Prof. Sharma, Prof. Tiwari and Prof. Agarwal for being strict to you.I am not supposed to give you sermons. They are meant for those who do not know. You know everything. You need no telling of your duties. All that is needed is the will—the will to improve. Please for your own sake, if not for mine or father's, take to studies. You are student first and to everything afterwards.
Your own dear brother,

Dear Brother,
I do not know how I should reply you. Your letter has opened my eyes. Your brother is not so spoiled past any improvement. I am really ashamed of myself. Your diagnosis is very nearly correct. I have never been a truant. Your brother is not a dunce, I assure you. You will now hear better about me.I have written to father to excuse me for my fault. I know, kind as he is, he will excuse me. Bless me, I may fulfil your wishes. With respectful regards,
Your dear brother,

October 25, 2008
My dear Sachin,
Many thanks for your loving letter received two days ago. I am very happy to know that you are quite well now.I give below a description of the Taj Mahal, a building of great historical importance. I hope you will find it interesting and useful.I visited the Taj Mahal at Agra on Sunday last. This grand building was built by Shah Jahan, the Mughal Emperor, in the loving memory of his beloved queen Mumtaj Mahal. This dream in white marble stands on a raised platform on the right bank of the holy river Yamuna. Four high minarets stand on the four corners of this terrace. Precious stones are beset in the walls and the verses of the holy Quran engraved thereon are still bright and intact. The Emperor and the Empress lie buried in their splendid tombs under the central dome. The tombs are enclosed by beautiful lattice work. The mosaic and floral work of this monument is matchless. There is a grand garden with a tank before this building. Several fountains play in it. Visitors sit here on marble benches and enjoy the charming beauty of the Taj which looks more beautiful in a moonlit night.I was lucky to have met a few friends of mine in the park. They too had come there to see the Taj. We chatted and enjoyed the grand sight of the world famous with the help of a professional guide.Hoping you would also visit this ‘Dream in white marble’ one day with your consort.
 Yours sincerely,
Sumit

.Dear father,
Many thanks for your affectionate letter received last evening. I am very happy to know that you are perfectly well at home with my mother and the little baby. As you have expressed your desire to know what I intend to be after completing my studies, my intention is as follows—As you and mother have always spoken high of the profession of a doctor, I intend to be the same. I like to be a doctor because he serves the suffering human beings. He relieves the sick and wounded of their pain and saves their lives. In my opinion, a true and selfless doctor is the true servant of God. I may add I wish to become a doctor not for money's sake but for the sake of suffering humanity.I hope you will appreciate my ambition and encourage me to attain it. With lots of regards to mother and love for Guddi.
Your affectionate son,

My dear Ramu,
Received a letter from father only yesterday and am shocked to know that you are so much discouraged for failing in your H.S. Exam that you are thinking of discontinuing your studies.Well Ramu, failures and success go together in life. Not only this, they say that failures are stepping stones to success. Don’t you see Raju, our neighbour's son? He failed in the H.S. Exam. in the year 2004. But he did not lose heart like you. On the contrary, he started working harder and with greater zeal, and the result was his success in the first division in 2005. Not only this, he has been passing every examination with credit since then. Didn’t his failure prove to be a blessing in disguise for him ?Dear Ramu, fortune favours the brave; don't be a coward. Look labour in the face and then you will enjoy its fruits.I hope you shall take up the challenge and get to your studies with greater zeal and gaiety.Write to me if you need any book or notes for your preparation.
Your loving brother,
Ajay Mohiley

88. Suppose you have a friend who is a book-worm. Write a letter to him suggesting him to take part in games.
 Room No. 15, New Hostel,
 Kishori Raman Inter College, Mathura.
16th May, 2008
My dear Rahu,
Received your loving letter two days back. Thanks for it. I am pleased to know that you have passed the Annual Exam. in the second division, but sad to know that you are often ill.One of the reasons of your ill-health, to my belief, is that you are too much given to reading books. My dear friend, ‘All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy and a sound mind lives in a sound body.’ In order to keep fit both mentally and physically, one should take exercise or play games everyday. Games will improve your health and enhance your mental vigour as well. Excess of everything is bad. A word for the wise, please spare a little time daily from your book-work and utilize it in playing games.Expecting a positive response,
Yours sincerely,
 Nagendra

You shall feel proud of me to know that I stood third in the monthly test of last month. I am also keeping good health as I play games every evening and shaping well as centre forward in football. 90. You were out for a couple of days for a visit to Agra. Write an account of the same to your father.
10, Canning Road, Agra.

Jan 12, 2008
Dear father,
We arrived here the day before yesterday. Our old friend Dr. Ramanand, who came to meet us at the Fort station, is a fine gentleman. His talks are very entertaining. He knows countless delightful stories, and Munni has become specially fond of him. The old gentleman is like a boy with grey hair. Since we came here he has always been with us. He has shown us nearly all the places of interest in this town.We like Agra intensely. Mother was highly impressed with the beauty of the Taj and the Mausoleum of Akbar at Sikandra. Munni, on the other hand, preferred the marble toys sold in Tajganj to any of the grand sites. She has purchased a lot of them. I have also bought several models of the historical moment. I am going to Fatehpur Sikri tomorrow to have a look at Akbar's grand capital. With love to brother and sister. I am,
Yours affectionately,
Sheetal
91. From a student to his father, giving his first impression of the college.
Anand Bhawan, 10, Tagore Lane, Delhi.
 25th July, 2008
My dear father,
You ask me how I like college, and in what it is different from school. Yes, it is different in many ways, and I like it ever so much better.Just as first, I did not like it at all, and almost wanted to run away. The senior students treat poor freshers as if they are fools, and play unpleasant practical jokes upon them. It was not very nice, but I soon saw that the best thing to do was to pretend not to mind and laugh at my own foolish mistakes. When I did this, they soon left me alone, but some students who get irritated and complained to the Hostel Superintendent, were teased worse than ever.College discipline is not so strict as discipline in a school. A student in a college lives like the heir-apparent in a kingdom. He sleeps much, plays a little, talks a great deal, and studies occasionally. He is responsible to none, and he is afraid of nobody. The only punishment to which he is liable is the fine, and this fine he extracts from his parents. Here the students roar like lions, fellow like bulls, and sing like street singers any song they like. The professors are different from school masters. They treat us friendly. They never care to know whether we have done our lessons or not. They come and deliver lectures without caring to know whether we follow them or not.The spirit of freedom is in the art of this place; and everyone is at liberty to go where he likes, do what he pleases, and say what he has in his mind. One may go to bed at anytime one likes, and get up at one's convenience. We live like so many princes, the servants doing everything for us. They clean our shoes, sweep our rooms, brush our clothes, arrange our beds and even our books and prepare our drink. In short, dear father this is a jolly life, it is liberty and unrestraint. I will tell you more about it, next time. Please convey my love to my dear mother. Yours affectionately,
 Rahul

94.Write a letter to your friend telling him how you spent the summer vacation.
 Saket Colony, Badaun
 July 5, 2008
My dear friend,
I am quite well here. I hope you are also quite well. In your previous letter you asked me to tell you how I spent my summer vacation. In this letter I tell you what you desired.During the summer vacation, I went with my parents to Mussoorie. We stayed there for 15 days. I enjoyed the vacation there. I saw there the Company Gardens and the Kempti Falls. I frequently took a ride in the trolley which carried us to the top of Gun Hill which is a fine picnic spot at some height. From Mussoorie we went to Haridwar and Rishikesh. We immensely enjoyed bathing in the holy Ganges both in the morning as well as in the evening on each day. We visited Lakshmam Jhoola twice. We hardly missed visiting any temple during our week-long stay there. We enjoyed utmost the Arti scene of the Ganges at Har-ki-Pauri at Haridwar. Believe me Varun, the scene at the Arti time is beggars description. We returned home after three weeks pulsating with mirth, energy and devotion. With best regards to your parents,
 Sincerely yours
Rakesh
95.Letter to father describing the prize distribution function of your school.
D.A.V. High School Shikohabad.
December 18, 2008
.Dear father,
I am perfectly well and hope all of you are quite well at home. As desired by you in your letter received last week. I am giving below detailed description of the Prize Distribution Function of my school. Our annual prize distribution took place day before yesterday. As the City Magistrate had kindly consented to preside over the function, great preparations were made for the occasion. A big shamiana was set up in the school compound, which was tastefully decorated with buntings, pictures, mottoes and pot-plants.In the middle was a platform with a chair for the President. On its right and left were placed chairs for the gentry of the town and the school staff. The boys sat on carpets in the front. They were neatly dressed and looked very smart. The prizes were arranged on tables near the platform. They consisted of books, shields, cups, medals and trophies. The President arrived at 2 p.m. He was received at the gate by the Headmaster and the members of the Managing Committee. The Manager of our school garlanded the chief guest. The school band played sweet music. As the President entered the shamiana, all stood up in their places and cheered. The function began with a melodious song sung by a band of boys in praise of the Almighty. This was followed by a short-instructive drama by the ninth class students. The Headmaster then read out the annual report of the school. After this the President gave away the prizes to the meritorious students and athletes.Amidst deafening cheers, the President stood upo to deliver his address. In a very fine short speech he expressed his pleasure at the great progress the school had made. He congratulated the prize winners and much appreciated the good social work done by the school. After a vote of thanks to the chair, the function came to an end. I hope I'll be with you next week.
Your loving son,
Ram Lal

96.) Letter to Uncle opposing proposal for marriage.
Agrawal Inter College, Moradabad.
April 4, 2008.
Dear Uncle
I am in receipt of your letter of the 1st instant. I am surprised to learn that my marriage has been fixed for 15th proximo. It pains me to disagree with you, but still I request you to postpone it for the present.I am yet a mere boy in teens. I have not yet finished my schooling. You want to make me a great man and send me to overseas for higher studies. But marriage would certainly stand in the way of my education and would deal a death blow to my aspirations. Moreover, I can't suport even myself at present. I feel I should not marry unless I am able to earn my own livings. Marriage involves many duties and responsibilities. But I find myself unable to shoulder at this age. Besides, my marriage will tell upon health and spoil my future career. So I request you to drop the proposal for the present. My annual examination comes off next month, second week. As soon as it is over, I will come home and then we shall talk the matter over.I hope you will forgive me for my disobedience.
Your loving nephew,
 Narendra
