At about 7 a.m., I come back and take tea with a light breakfast. I sit to study for about two hours. At nine I get up to take a bath. Then I take my food, collect my books, put on my clothes and go to school. I return from school at 4.00 p.m. I take tea and some fruits. After half an hour's rest, I go to school play ground for playing hockey. I come back home before sunset. I devote nearly two hours in doing my home-work and preparing my lessons for the following day as also revise my lessons. I finish this by 9.30. Then I take my dinner with my parents. Sometimes I see T.V. programme. After that I go to bed. On Sundays I wash my clothes and help my mother in one or the other domestic work.
My daily routine keeps me physically fit and mentally peaceful. I would advise you to follow a programme of your daily life to achieve pleasure and peace.

You will be very glad to know that this year's top prize for the best debator has come to me. It is a silver trophy beautifully cast and the name of the school is engraved on it.
The debate was on ‘Inter-school’ level. Three other boys from different schools took part in it. The topic of discussion was ‘Whether Municipalisation of Secondary School Education would be Beneficial.’
All the three boys spoke in favour of it. They said that municipali-sation of secondary education was the only way to bring about reforms in the system of education. According to them, it was proper to pass over secondary education to Municipal authorities to enable them to correlate the primary and secondary education. This would, they argued, channelise education from primary stage to higher secondary stage in one single stream which will make for uniform progress.
Their argument convinced many. My teachers felt restless when I stood up to speak. I started with a feeble voice but soon it became forceful. I smashed their arguments by saying whether my friends, in order to channelise education in one stream, would like to municipalise college education as well ? My arguments went home and the audience seemed convinced. I was highly applauded. My rivals were silent and I was declared the winner.
I was later told by my teacher that the manner of my speech was forceful as were my arguments. The boys and teachers of my school were very happy because I had brought honour to them. The function ended happily.

Ordinarily it would be difficult to form an opinion about others within such a short time. But the saying that coming events cast their shadows before time is correct, I think I will never have to change my opinion.
The moment I reached my school and sent word to the Principal, boys came rushing to receive me. They seemed happy to find a new addition in the rolls of the school. Many of them put different questions in a single breath asking my name, class, name of the previous school and my parents. They took me by the arm and conducted me to the Principal's room.
The Principal offered me a seat. I gave him the letter of recommendation from you. He praised you very much and assured me that a teacher of your standing would never write a letter of recommendation in undeserving cases. Therefore, he said, I was welcome to the school.
He then introduced me to my class teacher. He gave me a test. The manner of his asking questions from me was so sweet that replying to him was a matter of joy for me. His treatment showed that I was not at all a stranger to him.
I have been granted admission to Xth class and I have started my studies in the right earnest from the beginning. Though I feel quite comfortable here, yet I miss you very much.
I hope to see you during the Dussehra holidays to relate more experiences.

I hope you have received my previous letter by now.
During these days, I have been visiting one place after another. In my last letter I told you that I was leaving Mumbai for Varanasi. I reached Varanasi early in the morning of Tuesday last. There beautiful ‘ghats’ or the banks of the Ganga are a scene of great activity for the Hindus in the morning. The river flows so charmingly at a distance from the big shrines. There is neither the swiftness nor the shapelessness of the rivers here as in England.
I saw the Taj yesterday on a moonlight night. You will not believe me how enchanting the Taj is. It is all white marble and the layout of the gardens around it adds to its magnificence.
In the morning today I flew to Bhakra Nangal. It is a very high dam and matchless in the history of Asia. It is a great feat of engineer-ing skill.
Wherever I went I found the people busy in their work. At Varanasi, I saw a class of people called here ‘Brahmins’ who sit on the river banks and invoke blessings of gods and goddesses in favour of their visitors. Quite a number of them do not look like genuine priests. In this country people are very hospitable. This I found during my visit to Bhakra. The sturdy peasants of this region called the Punjab actually surrounded me and expressed their joy at meeting me by performing a dance called ‘Bhangra’. It is such a carefree exercise of the linbs that the like of which I have never seen in any other part of the world.
The country, as a whole, has changed a lot. I saw progress in every field of activity. Many new industries have sprung up. I was told that India was now capable to participating in space race.
There is still another point. Wherever I went, I found people desirous of peaceful progress. There is no effort at making false claims and creating mischief. It is really a socialist society which Indians were labouring hard to raise out of the ruins of the past.
I feel my visit to this country has paid me well. I wish you were able to accompany me.

Our woollies could not keep away the cold from our bodies.
The sky was heavily overcast with dark clouds and the rain had been lashing the ground with full fury. It was impossible to go out. All streets and roads wore a deserted look and small streams of rain water were flowing down the mountainous roads.
That day our milkman did not turn up at our house and we were afraid of going out to buy fresh milk from the bazar. Consequently we had to fall back upon powdered milk. Tea or coffee taken many times during the day afforded little comfort and we continued shivering even amidst the warmest atmosphere in our rooms.
We thanked God when in the evening the clouds burst and rain stopped. Yet this was no satisfaction because the icy cold night lay ahead. Our teeth were chattering and our fingers benumbed so much that our hands had been incapacitated. It was with great difficulty that we passed the night. I had never experienced such a cold and rainy day in my life.

It so happened that in the morning today, I along with six boys of my hostel went to take a bath in the river. We saw there men, women and children taking their bath near the banks. A woman was giving her four-year old son a bath at a little distance from the main ghats. The child suddenly slipped from her hand and was carried away by the current. The woman started screaming but in the noise her cries were not audible.
The cries suddenly fell on my ears and at once I understood the reason from her raised hands pointing towards the drowning child. It was too much for me and at once I jumped into the river without bothering to take off my clothes.
There was not much water in the river and the current was also not swift. It was however, too much for a little child who was being carried away slowly and slowly by the current.
I was swimming swiftly. When I was about to catch hold of the child suddenly I slipped into a ditch. I was about to go down into the water but my scouting spirit came to my rescue and I did not lose courage.
I am an expert swimmer. I raised myself from my slip and again dashed towards the child. Soon I was able to catch hold of him. In the meantime a couple of other swimmers had swam up to me and we were now able to raise the child above the water and bring him back to the bank.
The child was unconscious. I gave him first aid and water in his stomach was drained out. After some time the child regained consciousness and his mother heaved a sigh of relief and with tears in her eyes folded her hands before me.
She must be of your age. I told her that it was just my duty. After all it was not for nothing that I had become a scout.
The other boys related the incident to my teachers who were very pleased with me. It was praised very much and the Headmaster proposed to give me some reward.
I am all right here. I hope to see you soon during the summer vacations.

The school was started sixy years ago. Its Principal is a very well-known academician who has been to England as a teacher for several years. He takes great interest in teaching his students. He always stresses the importace of punctuality and discipline which, he says, English children learn in their mursery. His motto is; hard work and high character. He calls meetigns every Saturday and gives a gist of English life and society. It is through his efforts that our school has become a model institution.
Our teachers are equally interested in teaching us. They give due importance to sports. They give us all facilities to do hard practice. It is as such that our school is second to none in the field of sports.
Once a month outdoor rallies are organised. We are taught how to move in society. How to face great dangers without losing courage. In fact, the lessons of a lifetime importance are a part of our syllabus.
Scouting is another feature of our school. Our P.T.I. always stresses the importance of building up high character in a highly developed body. Rallies and jamboories are organised off and on. We get instruction as well as recreation.
Our school is very expensive. We have to pay Rs. 450/- per month as tuition fees and spent about Rs. 140/- more per month on stationery, bus and pocket money. In India, middle class families cannot afford to spare so much. Consequently, children of high class people alone can benefit from this standard.

He entered many classrooms and saw teachers taking classes. He examined us in English and we did well. He was very much pleased with my pronunciation.
He was accompanied by the Deputy Inspector of Schools and two other officials. These officials visited other classes and examined boys in various subjects.
In the office, they examined a few registers. He was so pleased with all round progress that he entered very good remarks in the school log-book and left about 1 p.m. He was very glad with the progress the students had been making. As such we were given a holiday for the rest of the day in Hour of the visitor.

Accidentally, a small girl came from a lane on my left and wanted to cross the road. She was quite ignorant of the approach of the car. When the driver of the car saw her, he in his attempt to save the girl moved the car towards me and by the time the car stopped, it struck me very heavily. I had a narrow escape, but the front wheel of my cycle was broken. The owner of the driver, who was also in the car apologised. I was much moved by the gentlemanliness of the man and let him go.After this I hired a tonga, kept my cycle on it and went to the nearest cycle's repairer. I had to have the wheel changed. I few minor repairs were also carried out. The cycle is again now in working order. I reached my school about two hours late that day.How is Lal Chand? All the different charts and maps of the class were several times fixed and refixed on the walls and still the Headmaster was not satisfied that their styles could please the Inspector.We also became fed up with the uneasiness that was prevailing in the school, and wanted that the Inspector should have come earlier.At last the day of the Inspector came. He came guarded by two Deputy Inspector of Schools, and one District and two Assistant District Inspectors of Schools. These all Inspectors looked like ordinary men and I saw nothing to be afraid of them. Some of the teachers and boys were wearing better clothes than the Inspectors. These Inspectors went to different classes and tested them. They simply asked one or two questions and that was all. The Divisional Inspector tested in English. He had some reading and then asked certain meanings and explanations.All went away by 3.30 p.m. and the school staff got relief with their departure.

I played the role of Chand Bardai in the famous play ‘Prithviraj-ki Anken’. Songs were simply fine, speeches excellent. The Principal's report was well received. In the prize distribution, I had my own humble share. The Principal's speech was short and sweet. I had a great effect on the audience. Bright bulbs and rods of various hues made it indeed very attractive. The whole thing pleased the eyes.Inside it was a pleasing sight. There were as many as 250 stalls. The one from the Embassy of Germany was the most spacious and best decorated. Gandhi Ashram Bhandar attractions were many. A hundred-rupees set include a pyjama, a kurta, an undervest and a cap. The stall of U.P. State Handicraft Deptt. attracted big crowds. Pieces of embroidered silk, marble-cut-monuments and machine-vulcanised shoes were hot favourites.About 50 more stalls of various industries, including the handicraft work from prisoners, glasswares from Firozabad added quality and variety to the show.Then came the ‘Eatables Square’. Confectioners from Meerut, Varanasi, Allahabad and Mathura drew the longest crowds. The Agra people sold Petha, Dal-month and salty things.The ‘Children Square’ was fairly interesting. The rolling giant wheel, the merry-go-round, the small zoo and the circus were most popular. Then came the ‘Well of Death’, ‘The Disappearing Lady’ and ‘Marvels of Mary’. The old lady, without hands, prepared tea with her feet, sewed, wrote and did pieces of embroidery.Above all, excellent light arrangements gave the exhibition a festive look. In night it looked like day.I think a visit there is worthwhile. I shall wait for you. You may come any day this week.Hope it finds you in the best of your health and happiness. He gave me a few injections and when I wanted to pay him with savings of my pocket money, he gave a pat on my back and refused to accept any fee. Seven days' labour brought the sadhu sound. He began to walk. He begged leave of me. I touched his feet. With tears in his eyes, he said, “Bachha (child), you have saved my life. I have nothing to give you save my blessings. My Master (God) will see, you get all.” So saying he went away. I got all. I could expect nothing more.So this is my hobby, Roberts. Animals love me alike. At lunch their tail was trying hard to wag.On resumption of the play, the first ball broke the partnership and the innings closed at 89. Our openers went in. Their bowling was supreme. Our openers were back to the pavillion with only two runs on the board. No. 3, Kishore tried to stem the rot but he failed. I, with the approval of the Captain, went at No. 4. I first decided to see the balls through. I played the first two overs with caution. Then I could see some loose balls also. Two boundaries in the third over made them nervous. Then I could see the ball well. I hooked, I turned, I swept. The score began to mount and at tea we were 60 for five.After tea, Raju, who was giving me excellent support was declared l.b.w. Dogra in his place proved better and now we played merrily. We won with ten minutes to spare and three wickets in tact. I had scored 46 out of 90 runs. I may get the ‘Man of the Match’ prize at the annual prize distribution.Thanks many for your advice Uncle, and now pat me on my back.

Several villages were washed off. The banks swelled and the water began to devour all that it could reach to. Man, money and material, all the three became its victims. The wide expanses of muddy water, with foams of wrath, floating over it, spared nothing. The kind mother Yamuna turned into a wild killer. Several houses came down. The thatches were swept away. Animals were driven away in the current. All types of animals—bulls, dogs, horses, wolves, jackals, even snakes—could be seen floating in the Yamuna.People of the neighbouring villages began to take shelter at high places—trees, mounds, but the flood water soon surrounded them. People sitting on tree tops with constant danger of trees themselves being swept away, prayed and waited for the rescue parties.The Yamuna continued shooting up and up for three days. Then it relented. Like a man coming to his senses, it began to come to its original banks.Military men and the social workers, under the guidance of local authorities, began to do rescue work. Difficult situation had to be faced. Two men had to be rescued in a sand island in the heart of the Yamuna with the help of helicopters. Men were saved, animals were taken out. It cost the government a lot. So, it had cost the people. But to the Yamuna, it had cost the most. It cost its good name.Thank God, the water did not come our Mohalla. Precious stones are beset in the walls and the verses of the holy Quran engraved thereon are still bright and intact. The Emperor and the Empress lie buried in their splendid tombs under the central dome. The tombs are enclosed by beautiful lattice work. The mosaic and floral work of this monument is matchless. There is a grand garden with a tank before this building. Several fountains play in it. Visitors sit here on marble benches and enjoy the charming beauty of the Taj which looks more beautiful in a moonlit night.I was lucky to have met a few friends of mine in the park. They too had come there to see the Taj. A student in a college lives like the heir-apparent in a kingdom. He sleeps much, plays a little, talks a great deal, and studies occasionally. He is responsible to none, and he is afraid of nobody. The only punishment to which he is liable is the fine, and this fine he extracts from his parents. Here the students roar like lions, fellow like bulls, and sing like street singers any song they like. The professors are different from school masters. They treat us friendly. They never care to know whether we have done our lessons or not. They come and deliver lectures without caring to know whether we follow them or not.The spirit of freedom is in the art of this place; and everyone is at liberty to go where he likes, do what he pleases, and say what he has in his mind. One may go to bed at anytime one likes, and get up at one's convenience. We live like so many princes, the servants doing everything for us. They clean our shoes, sweep our rooms, brush our clothes, arrange our beds and even our books and prepare our drink.In short, dear father this is a jolly life, it is liberty and unrestraint. We hardly missed visiting any temple during our week-long stay there. We enjoyed utmost the Arti scene of the Ganges at Har-ki-Pauri at Haridwar. On its right and left were placed chairs for the gentry of the town and the school staff. The boys sat on carpets in the front. They were neatly dressed and looked very smart. The prizes were arranged on tables near the platform. They consisted of books, shields, cups, medals and trophies.The President arrived at 2 p.m. He was received at the gate by the Headmaster and the members of the Managing Committee.The Manager of our school garlanded the chief guest. The school band played sweet music.As the President entered the shamiana, all stood up in their places and cheered. The function began with a melodious song sung by a band of boys in praise of the Almighty. This was followed by a short-instructive drama by the ninth class students. The Headmaster then read out the annual report of the school. After this the President gave away the prizes to the meritorious students and athletes.Amidst deafening cheers, the President stood upo to deliver his address. In a very fine short speech he expressed his pleasure at the great progress the school had made. He congratulated the prize winners and much appreciated the good social work done by the school.After a vote of thanks to the chair, the function came to an end. I hope I'll be with you next week.
